This installation combines imagery inspired by Cycladic sculptures, Madonna posters, Oprah magazines, and Nina Simone albums. New scholarship in the fields of genetics and archaeology cast light on the importance of our ancestral mothers not just as inspiration for some of the most iconic works of Paleolithic art, but more importantly the creators of what has been previously considered a male-only endeavor. Paleolithic fertility figures are being reinterpreted as portraits, or self portraiture, with a completely different notion of autonomy and self-representation. Did our early ancestors distinguish between biography and autobiography? I wrestle with these questions through the lens of this history, via the fine art and craft traditions passed down by my maternal ancestors.
