World’s Wonders

Oil on engraved wood, mother of pearl, carborundum, wood

The Crystal Palace was the first prefabricated structure of its type, assembled at Hyde Park for the first World’s Fair in 1850 around the elm trees living on site. I am interested in the perception of the exotic and how it shifts with its context. The focal point of the composition of this piece highlights the magnificence of the elm tree against the grid structure of the building- as the most precious wonder of the exhibit.
