Cast charcoal, glass, resin, steel

These vases are very delicate when viewed from one side and opaque and solid from the others. The frame supporting them is spare to create an ambiguous context reminiscent of a museum or domestic shelving. The sculpture is physical but diagramatic, concrete yet suggestive of a missing, fuller physical reality. The vase forms are inspired by archaeologists’ drawings of cross sections of ancient ceramics. As I sculpt from this mediated source of information, I mimic the archaeologists’ attempt to understand ancient cultures through the resource of surviving objects.
